7:26 pm - On the Monkey Island front...
Miscellaneous MI news here...

Mixnmojo has reviewed a new book about the history of LucasArts. I myself won't have the book in hand until after Thanksgiving, so I'll have to make do with their assessment for the moment.

Noteworthy are the sample images Mojo includes in the article. Among them are two early cover designs by Steve Purcell for Monkey Island 2 - both of which show Elaine Marley with black hair.

I've written about this minor quibble before but I had previously assumed that Purcell kept the appearance of the MI characters in his artwork consistent over time. Obviously not - the black-haired Elaine appears in the EGA version of MI1, on his MI1 box cover painting (in both of which, incidentally, she is shown with gray eyes), and now in his MI2 early box art concepts.

However, the VGA upgrade of MI1 gave Elaine's close-up character portrait red hair and blue eyes, which carried over into the later CMI. Purcell later used the CMI designs as a basis for a "re-imagining" of the characters for a proposed MI movie. The resulting new!improved!Elaine of Purcell's sketches had red hair and green eyes.

It's worth noting that Guybrush changes over time too: he has blue eyes on the (Purcell-painted) MI1 box cover but brown eyes in Purcell's newer MI Movie portrait of him, which is a detail based on his CMI appearance.

3:09 pm - Indy map montages, part 2: Young Indy
As promised, the dreaded Part 2 of my analysis of the Indiana Jones map montages. Cartography buffs rejoice, dial-up users weep.

Warning: lots of large images below the cut.

(Part 1 here)

Is it too much to ask for a little consistency? )

2:21 pm - Indy map montages, part 1: The Four Flicks
So, since I am an anal-retentive Indy geek, I thought with the release of the latest film I'd sit down, go through all four films (and, heck, Young Indy too) and analyze the different styles of maps used in the famous traveling montages.

With that said, be warned: LOADS of images behind the cut.
Part 1: Get your cartographic nerd on )

Part 2: Young Indy is to follow HERE.

ETA: fixed some info on the Crystal Skull maps after a second viewing.

ETA 2: added info on the original Raiders map sequence storyboards.

10:03 pm - I obviously have nothing better to do
So I get up this morning, and before heading off to my first class, I check Steve Purcell's new blog.

Yay for art that may or may not be from a canceled Monkey Island film!

But the first sketch he posted in the February 3 entry got me thinking. Because it basically contains the Word of God on a detail that was left rather nebulous in the various MI games (and is probably of some interest to fanfic writers*), namely Elaine's eye color.

Purcell's latest post shows a version of Elaine with green eyes. Keep in mind that he was the man responsible for establishing the look of the characters in the original Monkey Island game.

Several large images behind the cut, beware! )

Whew, a bit of a long rambling post there. Anyways, it boils down to: did Purcell, the designer of the MI1 characters, intend at the time of MI1 for Elaine to have blue or green eyes? My argument is that he went toward green, based on the fact that he clearly remembers salient details of his character designs (viz. the dead bird in Zombie LeChuck's hat, and Elaine's always-golden earrings), and that the original release of MI1 featured an Elaine with eyes that were NOT blue.

*Yes, there might be still one left somewhere in the world. Maybe two, even, if you want to be charitable.

8:45 pm - y helo thar.
So apparently I have an InsaneJournal now. Good thing to have, I suppose.

I might use this thing in the future. Look for random ranting about various PC games, some terribly antiquated. Oh, and perhaps a smattering about the odd movie or two.

Of course, nobody's actually going to read this thing, are they? :P
